Tomáš Jelínek (born April 29, 1962 in Prague , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player who played for the Ottawa Senators in the National Hockey League from 1979 to 1999 . His son Tomáš Jelínek junior was also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Tomáš Jelínek began his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of the Sparta ČKD Prague , for whose professional team he made his debut in the first division , the highest Czechoslovak division, in the 1979/80 season . He then did his military service for two years, playing for the army club Dukla Trenčín . When he had done this, he returned to Prague, where he was one of the leading players on his team for the next seven years. In 1989, his club exchanged him for Petr Bříza from TJ Motor České Budějovice . Jelínek completed two game years for motor before he went to other European countries for the first time, where he scored 47 scorer points in 41 games, including 24 goals, in the 1991/92 season for HPK Hämeenlinna in the Finnish SM-liiga . He was able to convince the talent scouts in North America and was only selected at the age of 30 in the eleventh round of the 1992 NHL Entry Draft as a total of 242nd player by the Ottawa Senators . For this he scored seven goals and six assists in 49 games in the 1992/93 season .

The 1993/94 season began Jelínek in the Ottawas farm team with the Prince Edward Island Senators . After just two games in the American Hockey League , he returned to Europe, where he initially for his hometown club Sparta Prague in the after division of Czechoslovakia inaugural Extraliga denied six games and finished it at Zürcher SC in the Swiss National League A .

In the following season he ran for HC Slavia Prague in the Extraliga and then for two and a half years for their league rivals HC Škoda Plzeň . In the middle of the 1997/98 season , the Czech returned to Sparta Prague, where he began the following season . In the further course of the season he also played for Sparta's league rivals HC Slezan Opava and HC Vítkovice . The season itself and his career he ended with 1. EV Weiden , for which he played in the third-class first division until the end of the season .

International

For Czechoslovakia , Jelínek took part in the junior division at the U18 European Junior Championships in 1980 and the U20 Junior World Championships in 1981 and 1982 . At the U18 European Championship in 1980 and the U20 World Cup in 1982, he and his team won the silver medal.

In the senior sector, he was in his country's squad at the World Championships in 1989 , 1990 and 1992 , at which he won the bronze medal and in 1991 at the Canada Cup . The culmination of his international career was winning the bronze medal with Czechoslovakia at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville .
