The junior ice hockey world championship in 1981 was the fifth edition of the world championship in the under-20 age group (U20) by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF. The A World Championship took place between December 27, 1980 and January 2, 1981 in the Bavarian cities of Kaufbeuren , Augsburg , Füssen , Landsberg , Kempten and Oberstdorf . The B World Championship was held from March 23 to 29, 1981 in Strasbourg , France . As in the previous year, a total of 16 teams took part.
The team from Sweden became junior world champions for the first time . The team from Austria was relegated from the A group. The Switzerland was B champion.
World Championship
The A group of the Junior World Championship was held in Kaufbeuren , Augsburg , Füssen , Landsberg , Kempten and Oberstdorf .

Eight teams took part in two groups of four teams each. The two best teams in each group qualified for the medal round. The four remaining teams played the only relegated team in the relegation round. In the medal and relegation round, the teams' games against their opponents from the preliminary round were taken over.
