In total, he reached 53 goals and exceeded the previous record for an American, which had been set by Joe Mullen , by twelve goals.
On January 1, 1987 Carpenter was given together with a second-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 1989 in exchange for Bob Crawford , Kelly Miller and Mike Ridley to the New York Rangers . A little more than two months later, however, they transferred him to the Los Angeles Kings together with Tom Laidlaw and in exchange for Jeff Crossman , Marcel Dionne and a third-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft in 1989 , with whom he spent the following two years. On June 30, 1992 he signed a contract as a free agent with his ex-club Washington Capitals. He stayed there for a season before he was on the ice for the New Jersey Devils in the NHL from 1993 to his retirement in 1999 at the age of 36 . With these he won the prestigious Stanley Cup in the 1994/95 season .
Following his playing career, Carpenter stayed with the New Jersey Devils franchise as a coach and worked from 1998 to 2000 for their farm team , the Albany River Rats from the American Hockey League , as an assistant coach.
