Thomas John "Tom" Laidlaw (born April 15, 1958 in Brampton , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 774 games for the New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings in national hockey between 1976 and 1990 League on the position of defender .
Career
Laidlaw spent his junior career between 1973 and 1976 first in the lower class junior leagues of his home province of Ontario with the Bramalea Blues . The defense attorney then moved to Northern Michigan University because of his studies in the United States . In addition to his four-year studies, the Canadian played for the university team in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . At the end of his college career, he won the championship of the CCHA with the team and thus crowned his four years in the team that he had always led as team captain . In addition, he was elected to the First All-Star Team of the division, which he had already succeeded in the previous year, and was also in the All-Star team of the national championship tournament of the entire NCAA game operations.
At the end of the 1979/80 season Laidlaw was appointed to the squad of the New Haven Nighthawks from the American Hockey League , which served as the farm team of the New York Rangers from the National Hockey League . The Rangers had already selected the defender in the sixth round in the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft in 93rd place and then signed him. After the successful start in the professional field, Laidlaw was with the beginning of the season 1980/81 in the NHL squad of New York and shone there in the following seven years as a reliable defensive player. In March 1987 he was transferred to the Los Angeles Kings with Bobby Carpenter , while Jeff Crossman , Marcel Dionne and a third-round suffrage in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft moved to the New York Rangers. In Los Angeles, Laidlaw had three more NHL years to follow before he was given to the farm team in the lower class International Hockey League to the Phoenix Roadrunners at the beginning of the 1990/91 game year . There the 32-year-old ended his active career after only four missions before the end of the 1990 calendar year. As a result, Laidlaw decided to work as a player's agent.
