history

The New Haven Nighthawks were founded in 1972 as a franchise of the American Hockey League . In their third AHL season, the Nighthawks reached the final of the Calder Cup for the first time in the 1974/75 season , in which they were defeated by the Springfield Indians with 1: 4 wins. After two years in which New Haven did not get beyond the first play-off round, they failed in 1977/78 and 1978/79 each in the final at the Maine Mariners . For the fourth and last time New Haven moved into the final of the Calder Cup in the 1988/89 season, but was again defeated by the opponent, in this case the Adirondack Red Wings .

After the 1991/92 season, the franchise entered into a cooperation with the newly founded Ottawa Senators from the National Hockey League and was renamed as Ottawa's farm team in New Haven Senators .
