Glenn Allan "Chico" Resch (born July 10, 1948 in Moose Jaw , Saskatchewan ) is a former American - Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper and coach who worked for the New York Islanders , Colorado Rockies , New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia from 1973 to 1987 Flyers played in the National Hockey League .

Career

As a junior he was at the University of Minnesota Duluth and played for the local team. After a season with the Muskegon Mohawks in the IHL , the Montreal Canadiens , who held the rights to Resch, but for which he had never played, gave him to the New York Islanders in the summer of 1972 .

In the first season he played in the AHL for the New Haven Nighthawks . He made his debut in the NHL in the 1973/74 season , but in addition to two NHL appearances, he mostly played for the Fort Worth Wings in the CHL , where he was named the best goalkeeper in the league. His breakthrough in the NHL came the following year. He stayed with the Islanders until the early 1980s. During this time he was elected to the Second All-Star Team twice and played just as often in the NHL All-Star Game . In 1976 he played for the Canadian national ice hockey team at the Canada Cup . In the 1979/80 season , when the Islanders brought the first of four Stanley Cups to New York, he was a regular goalkeeper in the regular season. In the playoffs, Billy Smith was used more often than him.

During the 1980/81 season , he was given to the Colorado Rockies along with Steve Tambellini . He moved with the team in 1982 and played for the New Jersey Devils for another three and a half years . During this time he won the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy and played his third All-Star Game. At the ice hockey world championship in 1982 he now played for the US national ice hockey team , for which he also competed at the Canada Cup two years later .

At the end of the 1985/86 season it was passed on to the Philadelphia Flyers . Here he helped to close the gap that Pelle Lindbergh had left after his death. In the following season he supported the young Ron Hextall , who was now the Flyers' regular goalkeeper before ending his active career in the summer of 1987.

"Doc" Emrick and "Chico" Resch as TV commentators for the New Jersey Devils

He got his nickname "Chico" from a teammate while he was with the Islanders, based on the American television series "Chico and the Man" . Around the year 2000 the nickname was also used for Robert Esche , whose name R. Esche reminded of Resch.
