Steve Sullivan (* 6. July 1974 in Timmins , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player and - coaches and current - functionary , who during his playing career from 1992 to 2013 among other things, 1,061 games for the New Jersey Devils , Chicago Blackhawks , Nashville Predators , Pittsburgh Penguins and Phoenix Coyotes in the National Hockey League on the position of right winger . Sullivan was awarded the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy in 2009. He also won the 1995 Calder Cup in the service of the Albany River Rats of the American Hockey League . Sullivan has been General Manager of the Arizona Coyotes from the NHL since summer 2020 .
Career
Sullivan played during his junior years from 1991 to 1992 for the Timmins Golden Bears in a lower class Canadian junior league. The striker then went for Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on the ice in the Ontario Hockey League , with whom he won the 1993 Memorial Cup .
Steve Sullivan was selected in the ninth round of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft in 233rd place by the New Jersey Devils . First the striker went for their farm team , the Albany River Rats , in the American Hockey League and won the Calder Cup with the team in the 1994/95 season . In the 1995/96 season he came to his first appearances in the NHL and scored five hits in 16 games and got nine points. During the 1996/97 season he was released to Toronto, where he stayed for three years. In the 1998/99 season he surpassed his personal record of 16 hits and 38 points, in which he scored 20 goals and 40 points in 63 games. In October 1999, the Maple Leafs put him on the waiver list, from which the Chicago Blackhawks selected him.
The Chicago Blackhawks were not a strong team at the time, but he got 65 points in the 2000/01 season . He continued to improve and managed 34 hits and 75 points in the following 2001/02 season . In February 2004 he was transferred to the Nashville Predators . In the first season for the Preds, he came in 80 games on 24 goals and 73 points. The 2005/06 season went better than before, as he was not only on the way to a new personal record, but also to a new franchise record with the most hits in a season. But because of an injury he had to pause a few games, so he came in 69 games on 31 goals and 69 points. Although the 31 hits were enough for a new franchise record, Paul Kariya also reached this mark, but with 13 more games in the account.
Due to a back injury, Steve Sullivan could not be used throughout the 2007/08 season . He chose his shirt number 26 because his older cousin Bob Sullivan (1957-2018) also wore this shirt number for the Hartford Whalers . On July 1, 2011, Sullivan signed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins . After the contract with the Penguins expired in the summer of 2012, he was hired by the Phoenix Coyotes . This transferred him on April 3, 2013 to the New Jersey Devils . After the season, Sullivan ended his career.
In September 2014, the Arizona Coyotes announced they would sign Sullivan as their development coach. The Canadian held this post for two years before he was promoted to Director of Player Development . After just one season, he was promoted again before the 2017/18 season. Since then he has been General Manager (GM) of the Coyotes Farm Team Tucson Roadrunners of the American Hockey League and Assistant GM of the Arizona Coyotes. When the general manager of the Coyotes John Chayka unexpectedly resigned in July 2020, Sullivan took over his position.
International
With the Canadian selection , Sullivan took part in the 2000 and 2001 World Championships . In both tournaments, the striker and Team Canada missed a medal win and finished them in fourth and fifth place. In a total of 16 games he scored five goals, and Sullivan also contributed three assists.
