Jason Demers (born June 9, 1988 in Dorval , Québec ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Arizona Coyotes from the National Hockey League since September 2017 and plays for them in the position of defender .
Career
Demers began his ice hockey career in the summer of 2004 when he was signed by the Moncton Wildcats from the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . In the course of the 2004/05 season, the 16-year-old rookie completed 25 games for the Wildcats, in which he only managed one assist. In the following season Demers was also initially in the Moncton squad, but was given up after 21 missions to the league rivals Tigres de Victoriaville . While the Wildcats were preparing to win the Coupe du Président at the end of the season , the defender with the Tigres failed in the first playoff round. However, Demers showed a significant improvement in his statistics after the change. This trend continued in the two following years. Although Victoriaville failed each in the first playoff round, Demers improved his offensive statistics steadily. After he had needed 69 games for his 24 points in the 2006/07 season, as he had formed a defensive duo with the attacking Maxim Noreau and took over the more defensive part, as in the previous season, he achieved 64 scorer points in 67 games in his final year . Noreau had meanwhile switched to the professional area. This made him the second best scorer of the team and the best defender in the entire league. Because of his achievements, he was eventually also by the NHL - franchises observed. The San Jose Sharks selected him in the NHL Entry Draft 2008 in the seventh round in 186th position and immediately signed him because he was no longer eligible to play in the LHJMQ due to his age.
After Demers had completed the pre-season training camp with the San Jose Sharks, he was ordered before the start of the 2008/09 season by management in the farm team , the Worcester Sharks , in the American Hockey League . There, after initial problems with the new situation, the defender was able to build on the performances from his last junior year. Ultimately, he scored 33 scorer points in 78 games and four more in twelve playoff games. In the course of the playoffs, he was also the head coach of the San Jose Sharks, Todd McLellan , on his performances . In the summer of 2009 he therefore played again in the training camp and made his debut in the National Hockey League at the beginning of the 2009/10 NHL season .
On November 21, 2014, he was transferred to the Dallas Stars for Brenden Dillon and a draft pick. The defender spent almost two seasons in Dallas before his contract, which expired after the 2015/16 season, was not renewed. As a result, he joined the Florida Panthers as a free agent in July 2016 . After a season, however, they gave it to the Arizona Coyotes in September 2017 and received Jamie McGinn for it .
On an international level, Demers made his debut for the Canadian national team at the 2017 World Cup , where he won the silver medal with the team.
