Niklas Hjalmarsson (born June 6, 1987 in Eksjö ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Arizona Coyotes in the National Hockey League since June 2017 . The defender previously spent ten years in the Chicago Blackhawks franchise , with whom he won the Stanley Cup in 2010 , 2013 and 2015 . He also won the silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics with the Swedish national team .
Career
Niklas Hjalmarsson began his career as an ice hockey player in his Swedish homeland in the youth of HV71 Jönköping, for whose professional team he was active in the Elitserien from 2004 to 2007 . During this period, the defender was selected in the fourth round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft as a total of 108th player by the Chicago Blackhawks .
For the Blackhawks he made his debut in the National Hockey League in the 2007/08 season . The Swede recorded one template in 13 games in his rookie year . In the following season, the left shooter played at the end of the season regularly in the NHL for Chicago, for which he was used in all 17 playoff games. Since he has played for the team from Illinois, he has also played for their farm team from the American Hockey League , the Rockford IceHogs . In the 2009/10 season he won the Stanley Cup with Chicago . At the beginning of November 2012 he moved to Italy due to the lockout . There he ran for HC Bozen from the A1 series .
The Swede was able to repeat winning the Stanley Cup in 2013 and 2015 with the Blackhawks. In June 2017 - after ten years in the organization of the Blackhawks - Chicago gave it to the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for Connor Murphy and Laurent Dauphin . There he extended his expiring five-year contract, which he had concluded with Chicago in the summer of 2013, for another two years in June 2018.
International
For Sweden , Hjalmarsson took part in the U18 World Junior Championship in 2005 and the U20 World Junior Championship in 2007 . At the 2014 Winter Olympics , he won the silver medal with the Swedish national team. Furthermore, he represented his home country at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 , where he achieved third place with the team.
