Eksjö is a place ( Tatort ) in the Swedish province of Jönköpings län and the historic province of Småland . Eksjö is the main town in the municipality of the same name .
Eksjö itself received town charter in 1403 and was a garrison town since the end of the 15th century . Today the garrison with 600 employees is the third largest public employer after the hospital with 1,700 and the city administration with 1,200 employees.
Eksjö is known for its unique wooden house architecture. The old town still corresponds to the medieval city map and is almost completely under monument protection with the historic wooden houses. In 1997 Eksjö was awarded the Europa Nostra diploma for the preservation of the old town. On August 16, 2015, however, the largest building in the old town was destroyed in a fire. Due to its role as a garrison town and the well-preserved wooden house architecture, the town is now classified as a Swedish Imperial Interest.
