Erik Brännström (* 2 September 1999 in Eksjö ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who since February 2019 when the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League is under contract and in parallel for their farm team , the Belleville senator , in the American Hockey League is used .
Career
Erik Brännström was born in Eksjö and played for Nässjö HC in nearby Nässjö in his youth . He then moved to the youth department of HV71 , for whose U20 he played in the J20 SuperElit , the highest junior league in Sweden, from the 2014/15 season . In the following year the defender completed 41 games there, in which he scored 30 points , while he also made his debut for the professional division of HV71 in the Svenska Hockeyligan (SHL). As early as the 2016/17 season, the Swede was mainly used for the men who won the Swedish championship at the end of the season , although Brännström was not on the ice in the playoffs. At the same time, he led the club's U20s as captain , achieved a points average of over 1.0 in the SuperElit (23 in 19 games) and was therefore honored as the best defender in the league. As a result, the newly founded Vegas Golden Knights selected him in the first round in the NHL Entry Draft 2017 in 15th position.
The Golden Knights provided Brännström with an entry-level contract in July 2017 , but handed him over to HV71 on loan for another year for further development. There he recorded 15 points in 44 SHL games before moving permanently to North America for the 2018/19 season. Vegas used him for the time being with the Chicago Wolves , his farm team from the American Hockey League (AHL), where he also convinced and represented the team at the AHL All-Star Classic 2019. In February 2019, however, the defender became the central part of a barter deal with which the Golden Knights signed Mark Stone to the Ottawa Senators' trade deadline . In return, Brännström moved to the Canadian capital with Oscar Lindberg and a second-round right to vote in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft . For the time being, he was also used there on the farm team, the Belleville Senators , but Ottawa called him to his squad after five games, so that he made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) in March 2019 .
Brännström is considered to be a great Swedish talent as well as a prototype of the technically adept and attacking defender, although his physique (1.78 m; 82 kg) is rated as well below average.
International
Brännström gained his first international experience at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2015 , where he won the silver medal with the Swedish U18 team as well as the bronze medal with the U17 team at the World U17 Hockey Challenge 2015 . Another silver medal followed at the U18 World Cup in 2016 , before the defender finished fourth with the U18 at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2016 and the U18 World Cup in 2017 . He then won another silver medal with the U20 national team at the 2018 U20 World Cup , before leading the Tre Kronor to fifth place at the 2019 U20 World Cup as captain . In addition, Brännström made his debut as part of the Euro Hockey Tour of the 2017/18 season for the senior national team of his home country.
