After the 2017/18 season, his expiring contract in Tampa was not extended, so he joined the Canadiens de Montréal as a free agent in July 2018 with a two-year contract . They handed it over to the Ottawa Senators for the trade deadline in February 2020 and in return received Aaron Luchuk and a seven-round vote for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft .
