Petawawa is a city located in the eastern part of the southern part of the province of Ontario , Canada . It is located on the Ottawa River and has around 16,000 inhabitants (as of 2011).

The city is located at the mouth of the Petawawa in the Ottawa opposite the Laurentine Mountains and east of the Algonquin Provincial Park . Petawawa is a popular stop for anglers , mountain hikers, and canoeists .
history
The earliest records of settlement in the region indicate that the region was colonized by Algonquin in the early 20th century . The name Petawawa comes from the Algonquian native tongue, biidaawewe , and means something like : "When someone hears a sound like this".
In the late 19th century, the region was increasingly populated by immigrants from Scotland, Ireland and Germany. The Canadian military bought a larger part in 1905. This became today's Canadian Forces Base Petawawa. During the Second World War there were prisoner-of-war camps for Germans at the military base. After the war, was there until its dissolution in 1995 Paratrooper - Regiment . Today it is one of the major bases of the Canadian armed forces.

Petawawa's primary employers are government agencies and government agencies. Most of the residents work as civilian employees or as soldiers on the Canadian Forces Base Petawawa . The headquarters of the 2nd Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group with over 5000 soldiers is located on the base. The second largest employer is Atomic Energy of Canada, Canada's largest nuclear and technology research center in the neighboring small town of Chalk River.
