Sheppard, who can look back on an extremely successful last junior year, celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Rochester Americans by winning the Calder Cup of the American Hockey League in 1987. In the NHL, he reached the final series of the Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers -Playoffs 1996 .
Career
Sheppard began his career in 1983 in the Ontario Hockey League with the Cornwall Royals . After his first season there he was selected in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft by the Buffalo Sabers in the third round in 60th position. However, the Canadian played for the Royals for another two years. In his last season he scored 142 points in 63 games, which was rewarded at the end of the season with the Red Tilson Trophy for the most valuable player in the OHL, the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy for the OHL top scorer and the appointment to the All-Star Team.
His first professional season played the right winger initially the American Hockey League - the farm team of the Buffalo Sabers, the Rochester Americans . For the 1987/88 season Sheppard then moved to the NHL for the Sabers. There he played until the end of the 1989/90 season , in which he only played 18 due to a joint injury. In the summer of 1990 he moved to the New York Rangers for a year . As a free agent , he went to the Detroit Red Wings the following summer , where he remained until October 1995, when Detroit gave him in exchange for Igor Larionow to the San Jose Sharks . With the Red Wings he had the best season of his career in the 1993/94 season with 93 points in 82 games. Since the Sharks could not qualify for the playoffs in the 1995/96 game year , Sheppard moved to the Florida Panthers after only 51 games , with whom he reached the final games for the Stanley Cup in the same year . However, the team was clearly defeated by the Colorado Avalanche . In March 1998, the Canadian moved to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Kirk McLean . After the 1998/99 season , Sheppard did not find a new team until he returned to Florida in November 1999 to join the Panthers.
He left his career in the 2000/01 season with the SCL Tigers in the Swiss National League A finish. During this season he also took part in the Spengler Cup 2000 with Team Canada .
