NHL Entry Draft
 <1983 1985>

The 1984 NHL Entry Draft took place on June 9, 1984 in the Forum de Montréal in Montréal in the Canadian province of Québec . In the 22nd edition of the NHL Entry Draft , the teams of the National Hockey League (NHL) selected a total of 250 players in twelve rounds. As the first overall draft pick , the Canadian center Mario Lemieux was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins , who would shape the NHL as one of the best players in the history of ice hockey. Kirk Muller for the New Jersey Devils and Ed Olczyk for the Chicago Black Hawks followed in second and third . The order of the draft resulted from the reversed final table of the past season 1983/84 , with the playoff teams after the teams that had missed the playoffs were in turn.

The 1984 Entry Draft was the first to be broadcast by CBC on Canadian television. As a result, the event was held alternately in different NHL cities from the following year. Meanwhile, the host Canadiens de Montréal made headlines by including Petr Svoboda in fifth place . This not only made him the most highly elected Czechoslovakian of all time, but to the surprise of many, was also present in person, as he had fled to the West shortly before as part of the 1984 Junior World Championship . Other curiosities occurred in later rounds, such as the Buffalo Sabers choosing an unavailable player, while the Philadelphia Flyers wanted to select an actor that had already been considered, so these two picks were invalidated. In addition, Tom Glavine, a player who made a career as a baseball player in the MLB instead of in the NHL , was moved to position 69 .

In retrospect, a larger number of stars were drawn relatively late in the draft in 1984, including Hall of Fame members Patrick Roy (51st), Brett Hull (117th) and Luc Robitaille (171th) as well as Cliff Ronning ( 134.) and Gary Suter (180.). Other well-known players include Gary Roberts , Kevin Hatcher , Scott Mellanby , Stéphane Richer , Michal Pivoňka and Kirk McLean .
