Career
Carkner played extremely successfully during his junior years between 1983 and 1986 for the Peterborough Petes in the Ontario Hockey League . During this time he was appointed to the league's all-star team in 1985 and 1986, and in his senior year together with Jeff Brown won the Max Kaminsky Trophy as the league's best defender. The defender had already been selected in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft in 14th place overall by the New York Rangers .
Carkner moved to the Rangers in the professional area for the 1986/87 season . However, he had a turbulent start to his professional career. After his rookie season , he was transferred to the Nordiques de Québec with Jeff Jackson in exchange for John Ogrodnick and David Shaw . There, too, Carkner was not at home despite a season with 27 scorer points and moved to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Greg Smyth and a third-round suffrage in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft . The defensive specialist had five successful years with the Flyers and played his most successful NHL season in the 1988/89 season with 43 scorer points.
In the summer of 1993, Carkner moved in exchange for Yves Racine and a four-round suffrage in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft to the Detroit Red Wings , where he played for two years and - as in previous years - concentrated more and more on his defensive game . He then moved as a free agent to the Florida Panthers , with whom he reached the final of the Stanley Cup in 1996 . After the 1998/99 game year , he ended his career at the age of 33.
International
Carkner represented his homeland in the junior division at the 1986 World Junior Championship , where he won the silver medal with the team. With the men's selection, he finished fourth at the 1993 World Cup in Germany .
