Matthew "Matt" Carkner (born November 3, 1980 in Winchester , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach . The defender played 237 games for the San Jose Sharks , Ottawa Senators and New York Islanders in the National Hockey League . His third cousin Terry Carkner was also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Carkner first played from 1997 to 2001 with the Peterborough Petes in the Canadian Ontario Hockey League . After he had already been selected in the second round of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft in 58th place by the Montreal Canadiens , but they had not offered him a contract even after two years, he signed a contract with league rivals San Jose Sharks in the summer of 2001 .
The Sharks put the tough defender on their new farm team , the Cleveland Barons . In total, the Canadian played five seasons for the Barons until the end of the 2005/06 season. In the 2002/03 season he was able to play only 39 season games due to a knee injury suffered in January 2003. Carkner had his best year in the 2005/06 season when he was able to collect 30 scorer points in 69 games. This significant increase, compared to previous years, was rewarded with an appointment to the roster of the San Jose Sharks. On February 6, 2006 he played his only NHL game so far against the Calgary Flames in which he was able to prepare a goal by Milan Michálek .
After the barons moved to Worcester , and the prospect of a permanent place in the Sharks defender rotation, the free agent signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the summer of 2006 . There he has been playing for the AHL farm team, the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins, since the beginning of the season . At the end of the season he was honored with the Yanick Dupré Memorial Award for the player who distinguishes himself through special commitment in society and signed a contract with the Ottawa Senators for the new season as a free agent . After three years in Ottawa, he joined the New York Islanders in 2012 .
With the Cleveland Barons, Carkner holds the franchise records for the most games (315) and the most penalty minutes (948), and the most penalty minutes in a season (335).
After he had missed most of the 2014/15 season due to a back operation, the Islanders gave him to their AHL farm team, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers , after his recovery in February 2015 . There he completed 19 games by the end of the season and then only received a two-year AHL contract, so that he was no longer used in the NHL. However, after the following season 2015/16, Carkner ended his active career and took on the role of assistant coach at the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
