The 2004/05 season was the 69th regular season of the American Hockey League (AHL) . The regular season began on October 13, 2004 and ended on April 17, 2005. During that time, the 28 teams in the league played 80 games each. The playoffs began on April 19th.

Due to the failure of the NHL season 2004/05 because of the lockout , the AHL was more prominent, as many NHL professionals spent the season with the AHL farm teams of their original teams. The AHL also enjoyed an increase in audience numbers as a result. The Edmonton Road Runners played throughout the season at Rexall Place , the actual home of the Edmonton Oilers from the NHL .

On February 14, 2005, the 18th AHL All-Star Classic took place, which was played between a Canadian All-Star team and the PlanetUSA team, consisting of US and international players. The venue was the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester , New Hampshire . The PlanetUSA team won 5-4 after a shootout .

There was a rule change at the beginning of the season. If there is a tie after extra time, there will be a shootout in the regular season. In playoff games, play continues until a goal is scored.
