Kyle Wellwood (born May 16, 1983 in Windsor , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 529 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs , Vancouver Canucks , San Jose Sharks and Winnipeg Jets in the course of his playing career between 1999 and 2013 National Hockey League has contested on the position of the center . His younger brother Eric was also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Wellwood was born in 1983 in Windsor, the son of a teacher and an engineer. After the eleventh grade, he left his French-speaking high school to devote himself entirely to ice hockey. At that time he played in the Ontario Hockey League for the Belleville Bulls , later he moved within the league to the Windsor Spitfires . Even before his move, the Toronto Maple Leafs had selected him in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft in the fifth round as 134th. He had also won the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy , William Hanley Trophy and the CHL Sportsman of the Year Award between 1999 and 2003 , making him one of the most successful Canadian junior players of those four years.

After very successful years in Canadian junior hockey , he stepped onto the ice for the first time as a professional ice hockey player with the St. John's Maple Leafs in 2003. He scored 55 points in 76 games for the AHL - Farm Team of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2003/04 season , which caught the attention of Pat Quinn , then head coach of the NHL team. This gave him the chance to make his debut in the NHL that same season.

During the lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season , he played another year at St. John's, contributing 87 points in 80 games. This record made the Canadian the fourth best scorer in the AHL. The peak of his AHL career came on October 30, 2004, when he scored five goals for the St. John's Maple Leafs against the Cleveland Barons , setting a new franchise record. In the 2005/06 season he played 81 games and scored eleven goals and 34 assists in his NHL rookie season .

In the 2006/07 season Wellwood developed into a leading player on the Maple Leafs team. At the beginning of the season he ran on with Mats Sundin and Darcy Tucker in the front row, but after Tucker's transfer to the second row, Olexij Ponikarowskyj took his place. On December 16, 2006, Wellwood scored his first NHL hat trick in the game against the New York Rangers . He was also able to tax two assists, so he set a new personal record with five points in an NHL game. Due to injuries, however, he was limited to 48 games during the season, in which he scored 42 points.

However, the 2007-08 season should represent a step backwards from Wellwood. Again he missed over 20 games due to injuries and his points yield dropped significantly, so that he only got eight goals and 13 assists in 59 games. At the end of the season, the Maple Leafs decided not to rely on the services of Wellwood and placed him on the waiver list. From there he was finally committed to the Vancouver Canucks , but where he could not prevail in the NHL squad because he was injured during the summer break. Shortly after the start of the 2008/09 season , the Canadian was sent to the AHL to the Manitoba Moose , but was ordered back to Vancouver before his first assignment. Wellwood took his chance and became a fixture on the team. In the following year he was clearly fitter and lighter than in the previous year. With 25 scorer points, he confirmed the 27 of the previous year. His contract was not extended after the end of the 2009/10 season.

In October 2010 Wellwood was signed as a replacement for Chris Bourque by Atlant Mytishchi from the Continental Hockey League , with which he signed his first contract with a European club. In January 2011, he finally signed a one-year contract with the St. Louis Blues from the NHL. However, the striker had to be placed on the waiver list for 24 hours before his return due to NHL regulations. From there, the San Jose Sharks finally selected him and instead of the Blues secured his services. With the Sharks, the striker blended in well and formed a successful storm line with Joe Pavelski and Torrey Mitchell . However, the management did not extend his contract at the end of the season. In early September he finally accepted a contract offer from league rival Winnipeg Jets .

In September 2013 Kyle Wellwood signed a contract with one month maturity at EV train in the National League A . The striker was signed for the injured Josh Holden but retired for personal reasons in November 2013.

International

At the international level, Wellwood was used for his home country at the 2003 U20 World Junior Championship in Canada . When the team won a silver medal, the center contributed five scorer points in six games. In the final, the Canadians lost 3-2 to their arch-rivals Russia .
