Torrey Mitchell (born January 30, 1985 in Greenfield Park , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who has played for the San Jose Sharks , Minnesota Wild , Buffalo Sabers , Canadiens de Montréal and Los Angeles Kings in the course of his active career of the center has played.

Career

Mitchell began his career in 2002 at Hotchkiss School , one of the most prestigious high schools in the United States , where he played for two years before going to the University of Vermont . There he studied for three years and ran for the university team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In three seasons from 2004 to 2007, the Canadian collected a total of 105 points in 115 games. In the 2005/06 season, his best college year, he was the third-best assist and eighth-best points collector of Hockey East , a league of the NCAA. He was also elected to the All-Rookie Team of the Eastern College Athletic Conference in his 2004/05 rookie year . After completing his studies, he received a contract offer from the San Jose Sharks from the National Hockey League , who had selected him in the fourth round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft in 126th position.

The Sharks put Mitchell at the end of the 2006/07 season first in their farm team , the Worcester Sharks from the American Hockey League . He reached seven points in eleven games of the regular season and two in the team's six playoff games. In the fall of 2007, the striker took part in the training camp of the NHL team and was part of the team at the start of the 2007/08 season . There he established himself despite the great competition with consistently good performances. Especially on the defensive and in the minority game , Mitchell set accents, which he put other defensive strikers like Patrick Rissmiller , Curtis Brown and Marcel Goc in the shade. The defensive specialist eventually completed all of the team's games, both in the regular season and in the playoffs, and came up with 23 points in 95 games. His achievements over the course of the season earned him the team's internal prize for the best rookie . Mitchell caused a stir in the course of the season when he accidentally collided with opponent Kurtis Foster of the Minnesota Wild in March 2008, so unfortunate that he was in the gang at high speed that Foster broke his thighbone . The NHL therefore changed the rules during the summer break in order to avoid such situations - body contact in the area behind the goal with unauthorized long-range shots with touch icing  - in the future.

The following season started badly for the striker when he broke his leg after a collision with opponent Brett Westgarth when he hit the goal post at the start of the training camp in September . He was only able to train with the team on the ice for the first time just before the Christmas holidays and was finally summoned to the Worcester Sharks in the AHL in mid-January 2009. There the Canadian should gather match practice before returning to the NHL roster. However, Mitchell suffered another leg injury on his second assignment in Worcester, which in turn forced him to take a three-month break. It was not until the third game of the first playoff round against the Anaheim Ducks that he finally made his season debut for San Jose in the NHL. In the following summer, the Canadian was unlucky with injuries and missed the first month and a half of the 2009/10 season because of a tendinitis in his knee . In November he was sent again in his career to the Worcester Sharks in the AHL to collect match practice.

On July 1, 2012, he signed a three-year contract with the Minnesota Wild as a free agent . On March 5, 2014, Torrey Mitchell was handed over to the Buffalo Sabers together with a second-round draft pick in 2014 and 2016 , in return the Wild received Matt Moulson and Cody McCormick .

After a year in Buffalo, the Sabers gave him to the Canadiens de Montréal in March 2015 and in return received Jack Nevins and a seven-round vote for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft . After about one and a half years, the Canadiens transferred him to the Los Angeles Kings in November 2017 and were given a success-based five-round vote for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft . This should be a vote for the fourth round, provided Los Angeles reaches the playoffs this year; this was later fulfilled.

His expiring contract was not extended in Los Angeles, so that in July 2018 he decided to move to Europe for the first time and signed a one-year contract with Lausanne HC from the Swiss National League . After the end of the 2018/19 season, he ended his active career.
