NHL Entry Draft
|
The NHL Entry Draft in 2016 was held on 24 and 25 June 2016 in the First Niagara Center of Buffalo instead. It was the 54th edition of this event . In seven rounds, the NHL franchises selected 211 players, with the Toronto Maple Leafs selecting the American Auston Matthews in first overall position. Second and third were Patrik Laine ( Winnipeg Jets ) and Pierre-Luc Dubois ( Columbus Blue Jackets ).
Available players
All players born between January 1, 1996 and September 15, 1998 are eligible for the draft. In addition, all undrafted, non-North American players over the age of 20 are eligible for the draft. Also available are those players who were elected in the NHL Entry Draft 2014 and who did not sign an entry contract with their original draft club by the time of the Entry Draft 2016 .
Draft order
Legend : First right to vote Second right to vote Third right to vote
|
|
The draft order of all teams that did not reach the play-offs in the 2015/16 season was determined by the draft lottery. This year, for the first time, not only the first right to vote was raffled, but also the second and third. The chances of winning the first right to vote corresponded to the percentages introduced in the previous year (see table), while the winning probabilities for the second and third round of tickets changed depending on the team that had drawn the previous right to vote. As in the previous year, the change was justified by the increasing equilibrium of the sporting competition, so the team with the worst points this year only had a chance of 52.5% to even receive one of the first three voting rights.
The draft lottery took place on April 30, 2016, with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the team with the lowest points of the season, also being awarded the first right to vote. The second right to vote went to the Winnipeg Jets , which climbed four places before the Columbus Blue Jackets won the third and final lottery and rose one rank.
The draft order of the 16 playoff participants was fixed since the Stanley Cup final. The Stanley Cup winner (Pittsburgh) was placed on position 30, the opponent in the final (San Jose) on position 29. The teams eliminated in the conference finals were sorted into positions 27 and 28. The remaining playoff teams were set based on their standings in the regular season. The rule is that the team with the fewest table points should be in 15th position. The draft order applied to all rounds of the Entry Draft, so the lottery only changed the order of the first round of voting. In addition, the teams could acquire voting rights from other teams via transfers as well as give their own to other teams.

---|---|---|---|
February 25, 2015 | Los Angeles Kings | Carolina Hurricanes | The Los Angeles Kings received Andrej Sekera from the Carolina Hurricanes and gave in return Roland McKeown and a first-round right to vote. The Hurricanes should get the right to vote for the Entry Draft 2015 if the Kings reached the playoffs that year; However, they did not succeed, so that the right to vote for the Entry Draft 2016 went to Carolina. |
March 1, 2015 | New York Rangers | Arizona Coyotes | The Arizona Coyotes received Anthony Duclair , John Moore , a second-round suffrage for the Entry Draft 2015 and a first-round suffrage for the Entry Draft 2016. February 25, 2016 | Chicago Blackhawks | Winnipeg Jets | The Chicago Blackhawks received Andrew Ladd , Jay Harrison and Matt Fraser from the Winnipeg Jets and gave in exchange for Marko Daňo , their first-round voting rights and a success-based third-round voting right for the Entry Draft 2018 (if Chicago wins the Stanley Cup 2016; did not happen) . |
