Veini Vehviläinen (* 13. February 1997 in Jyväskylä ) is a Finnish professional ice hockey goaltender who since June 2019 with the Columbus Blue Jackets in the National Hockey League is under contract and in parallel for their farm team, the Cleveland Monsters in the American Hockey League for use comes. With the Finnish national team , he won the gold medal at the 2019 World Cup .

Career

Veini Vehviläinen began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of JYP Jyväskylä , for whom he made his debut on September 19, 2015 with a shutout against the Pelicans in the Liiga . Since 2014 he has also played for JYP-Akatemia , training team and cooperation partner of JYP Jyväskyla, in the second-class Mestis . At the NHL Entry Drafts in 2015 and 2016 , he was classified by the Central Scouting Service as the sixth (2015) and third best (2016) young European goalkeeper, but was not drafted. In January 2017 he was loaned to Vaasan Sport from the Liiga until the end of the season.

In April 2017, the goalkeeper moved to Oulun Kärpät within the Liiga and was a regular goalkeeper for the team in the 2017/18 season, so his contract was extended by two years in December 2017. At the end of the season he won the Finnish championship with Kärpät , while he was personally awarded the Urpo-Ylönen trophy as the best goalkeeper. In the 2018 NHL Entry Draft , he was considered a little later in 173rd position by the Columbus Blue Jackets . In the following season 2018/19 he led the entire Liiga in victories (25), goals against goals (1.58) and catch quota (92.3%), so that he defended the Urpo-Ylönen trophy.

The Columbus Blue Jackets provided the Finn with an entry-level contract in June 2019 before he was handed over to the Cleveland Monsters , the Blue Jackets' farm team from the American Hockey League (AHL), as expected as part of the preparation for the 2019/20 season .

International

For Finland, Vehviläinen took part in the junior division of the U18 World Cup in 2015 and the U20 World Cup in 2016 and 2017 . With the U18 selection, he became vice world champion in 2015, was elected to the all-star team of the tournament and achieved the second best catch quota after the Russian Anton Krassotkin and the second best goalscoring after the American Evan Sarthou . In the following year he was even able to become world champion with the U20 juniors . In 2017 he had to fight relegation from the top division with the Finns until the last game and with the best catch quota and the lowest goals against goals of the tournament, he made a significant contribution to the relegation.

For the senior national team of his home country debuted Vehviläinen as part of the World Cup in 2019 and won there with the team promptly won the world title.
