history

Friendly match against Canada 2009

The Finnish U20 national ice hockey team was founded in 1974 on the occasion of the first unofficial hosting of a junior world championship . Up to and including 1998, the U20 national team covered the entire junior area at the World Championships, while the U19 national team took part in the Junior European Championships. Since the introduction of the U18 World Championships in 1999 , the Finnish U20 national team has only represented the U20 junior level at world championships.

The Finnish U20 national team is one of the strongest in the world and is in third place in the all-time medal table following the U20 World Cup in 2016 with four world championship titles, four silver and six bronze medals. Since the first unofficial world championship, in which the silver medal was won behind the Soviet selection, the Finnish U20s have consistently played in the highest performance level (initially A world championship, since 2001 top division). However, the Scandinavians had to wait until 1987 for their first title win. After it took more than ten years to get to titles two (1998) and three (2014), the fourth title could be won two years later. At the 2017 World Cup, however, the Finns had to accept their worst position to date with ninth place and were only able to secure relegation in the relegation round with two wins (2: 1 and 4: 1) against Latvia . In accordance with this ups and downs, the team won their fifth world championship title in 2019 .

Participation in the Mestis

Since the 2005/06 season , Finland's U20 national team has been participating in the Mestis , the second highest Finnish professional ice hockey league, to better prepare for international tournaments , with the team playing fewer games than regular participants and not making their games in the official ones Score.
