The 1988 Junior Ice Hockey World Championship was the twelfth edition of the World Championship in the under-20 age group (U20) by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF. The Canadian team became junior world champions for the third time .
The A-World Championship took place from December 26, 1987 to January 4, 1988 in Moscow in the Soviet Union . The B World Championship was held from March 12 to 21, 1988 in Sapporo , Japan . The C group was held from 18th bis 27. March 1988 in Belluno and Feltre in Italy instead. A total of 24 countries took part in the three tournaments.
As in 1980 and 1984 , there was no men's ice hockey world championship in the 1988 Olympic year , so the junior world championship was the only ice hockey world championship of that year.
