The Junior Ice Hockey World Championship in 1979 was the third edition of the World Championship in the under-20 age group (U20) by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF. It took place from December 20, 1978 to January 3, 1979 in Karlstad and Karlskoga in Sweden . For the first time there was also a B World Junior Championship, which was played from March 5th to 9th, 1979 in Caen , France .

The Soviet Union team became junior world champions for the third time . The team from Norway was relegated, and Switzerland became B world champion and promoted to the A group .

World Championship

mode

Eight teams took part in the tournament. The last of the previous year, Switzerland, was replaced by Norway. The eight teams played in the preliminary round in two groups of four. The two best teams in each group qualified for the medal round. The four remaining teams played off the relegated team in the relegation round. In the relegation round, the teams' games against the opponent from the preliminary round were taken over.
