Winner: Russia |
The 3rd ice hockey world championships of the U18 juniors of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF were the ice hockey world championships of 2001 in the age group of under-eighteen year olds (U18). A total of between 5 March and 21 April 2001 43 national teams at the seven tournaments in the Top Division, Divisions I to III and Asia-Oceania Division and the qualifications for Division III and Asia-Oceania division for the following year in part .
For both Junior World Championships from this year - as with the seniors and women - a new name for the different groups was applied. The B group was designated as Division I, the C group as Division II and the D group as Division III. The A group was generally only renamed the Top Division. Due to the IIHF decision that Canada should receive a wildcard for the top division for the 2002 World Cup , there was no relegation to division I. The top division was increased to twelve participants for the following year.
For the first time, the world champion was Russia's team , which clearly beat the surprise team from Switzerland 6-2 in the final . The German team took fifth place in the top division and rounded off the good performance of the German-speaking nations in the top division. Austria finished second in Division I and narrowly missed promotion.
