Denis Sergeyevich Grebezhkov ( Russian Денис Сергеевич Гребешков ; English transcription: Denis Sergeyevich Grebeshkov ; born October 11, 1983 in Yaroslavl , Russian SFSR ) is a former Russian ice hockey player who was most recently under contract with the Edmonton Oilers in the National Hockey League .
Career
Denis Grebeschkow began his career in the youth teams of Torpedo Yaroslavl . From 1999 he played for the second team of his home club in the third-rate Pervaya League before he was appointed to the first team during the 2001/02 season. He then completed 27 games this season and won the Russian championship with the club, which has now been renamed Lokomotive Yaroslavl . During the NHL Entry Draft 2002 Grebeschkow was selected in the first round in a total of 18th position by the Los Angeles Kings , but stayed in his hometown for another year. With Lokomotive he won the main round of the 2002/03 season and defeated in the playoffs Salawat Yulayev Ufa , the HK Lada Tolyatti and Severstal Tscherepowez , so that Grebezhkov won his second championship title in the Super League.
From the 2003/04 season, the defender played for the Los Angeles Kings and completed 33 NHL games for the team. In March 2006, the Russian was transferred to the New York Islanders together with Jeff Tambellini , while Los Angeles received Mark Parrish and Brent Sopel in return . Following the 2005/06 season , he returned to Yaroslavl for one season. During this time, the NHL rights to the player were given by the Islanders to the Edmonton Oilers . In return, the New York Islanders received Edmonton's defender Marc-André Bergeron and their third-round vote for the 2008 NHL Entry Draft .
On July 1, 2007, Grebeschkow signed a one-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers. In February 2008, he scored the 8,000th goal in Edmonton's franchise history in a game between the Oilers and the Nashville Predators . His contract was extended for another year in April. Within three years, the Russian was on the ice 223 times during the regular season for the Oilers, collecting 82 scorer points. The player and the team were not allowed to play in the play-offs. In March 2010, he was given in exchange for a second-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2010 to the Nashville Predators. For the Predators, however, the defender only played a total of six games due to injuries; his expiring contract was not extended. In July 2010 he signed a two-year contract with SKA Saint Petersburg from the Continental Hockey League .
At the end of October 2012 Grebeschkow moved within the KHL to HK Yugra Khanty-Mansiysk . For the 2013/14 season, the Russian signed a one-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers from the National Hockey League and was subsequently mainly used by the Oklahoma City Barons in the AHL.
International
Grebeschkow began early in his career to represent his native Russia internationally. In 2001 he was appointed to both the U18 and U20 teams and took part in the respective junior world championships. At the U18 World Cup in 2001 he won the gold medal. In the following two years he won two more gold medals in the U20 world championships.
For the Russian men's national team , he took part in the 2007 , 2008 , 2009 , 2010 and 2011 world championships. In 2008 and 2009 he became world champion with Russia.
