The Order of Merit for the Fatherland ( Russian Орден "За заслуги перед Отечеством" ) is a Russian order that was donated on March 2, 1994 by Boris Yeltsin in four classes and a medal in two classes. Since the re-establishment of the Order of St. Andrew the First Appointed , the Order of Merit has been the second highest state award in the Russian Federation.

The Order's Medal of Merit is awarded in two stages for military merit and for civil merit. According to the decree, the order is an “award” and not a knightly order . His motto is "Polsa, tschest i slawa" ( "Польза, честь и слава" , "Benefit, honor and fame").

The medal is a golden, red enamelled cross on which the Russian double-headed eagle is placed. In the middle there is a shield with the image of Saint George fighting the dragon .

The Russian President carries a symbolic copy of the order as official insignia with the Collane mark of the President of the Russian Federation . For military merits, the medal can also be awarded with swords. To do this, two crossed swords are placed between the cross and the carrying ring.
