Wladimir Evgenjewitsch Fortow ( Russian Владимир Евгеньевич Фортов , English transcription Vladimir Evgenievitch Fortov; born January 23, 1946 in Noginsk in Moscow Oblast ; † November 29, 2020 ) was a Russian physicist .

Life

Fortow studied physics from 1962 at the Moscow Institute for Physics and Technology (MIPT) with a degree in 1968 and a doctorate in plasma physics in 1971. At the invitation of Nikolai Nikolajewitsch Semjonow , he then joined the group of Lev Altschuler and Jakow Borissowitsch Seldowitsch . In 1976 he earned a second doctorate there (from the Russian Academy of Sciences, Physics of strongly coupled plasma generated by strong shock waves) and in 1978 became Professor of Physics and Chemistry at the Soviet Academy of Sciences. In 1986 he became head of the Laboratory for High Temperatures of the Soviet Academy of Sciences and in 1991 Professor of High Energy Physics at MIPT. Since 1992 he has been the director of the Institute of High Energy Density of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 1998 he became head of the Electrical Power Engineering Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

He studied the generation and properties of dense plasmas and the physics and chemistry of extreme states, for example generated with the help of shock waves and detonation waves.

He was also involved in various space projects such as the Vega mission to Halley's Comet and the study of the Shoemaker-Levy 9 impact on Jupiter and experiments on dusty plasma.

From 1996 to 1998 he was Minister of Science and Technology in Russia and Deputy Prime Minister at the same time.

He was an external member of the National Academy of Engineering (2002) and the Royal Academy of Engineering (2003) and a full member of the Academia Europaea (1998). He is also a member of the International Academy of Astronautics (2000). In 1996 he became Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences , of which he became a corresponding member in 1987 and a full member in 1991. He held this office until 2001.

In 2005 he became Deputy Head of the National Commission of the Russian Federation on UNESCO Affairs. In 2014 he was elected as a foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences .

From May 29, 2013 to March 23, 2017 he was President of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The new presidential election, originally planned for March 2017, did not take place because Fortow and the two other applicants withdrew their applications for organizational reasons. The election was postponed to September of the same year. A deputy president was appointed for the transition period. Fortow decided not to run again. As the Russian Academy of Sciences announced, Fortow died as a result of a COVID-19 disease.
