The Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (often abbreviated to MPE ) was founded in Munich in 1963 as a branch of the Max Planck Institute for Physics and Astrophysics . In 1991 it became an independent institute. It is primarily concerned with satellite-based astronomical observations of infrared, X-ray and gamma radiation, as well as complementary earth-based observations and experiments in the laboratory. It is an institute of the Max Planck Society and is located in Garching near Munich in the immediate vicinity of the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics and the European Southern Observatory (ESO) with which there is close cooperation.
The directors and their areas of work are:
- Ralf Bender , Extragalactic Astronomy, Optical and Interpretative Astronomy, Physics of Near-Earth Space
- Reinhard Genzel , Infrared and Submillimeter Astronomy
- Paola Caselli , astrochemistry, galactic and extragalactic stars and planets, molecular astrophysics, and astrobiology
- Kirpal Nandra , X-ray and Gamma-Ray Astronomy
International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS)
The MPI is involved in the International Max Planck Research School for Astrophysics , which is located in Garching. Other partners are the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics , the LMU Munich observatory and the European Southern Observatory . An IMPRS is an English-language doctoral program that allows a structured doctorate. The spokesman for the IMPRS is Ralf Bender.
