Ilya Sergejewitsch Glasunow ( Russian Илья Сергеевич Глазунов ; born June 10, 1930 in Leningrad ; † July 9, 2017 in Moscow ) was a Soviet or Russian painter .

Life

His father, Sergei Fyodorowitsch Glasunow, was a historian. At the age of twelve Ilya Glasunov escaped from besieged Leningrad on the Road of Life to the Soviet hinterland. After the Second World War , Glasunov's family returned to Leningrad. In 1957, Glasunov organized his first exhibition in Moscow.

His works are particularly characterized by the influence of icons and the religious thematic of Orthodoxy . Glasunov dealt with historical, literary and religious subjects. At the time of the Soviet Union he also moved in circles of nationalist dissidents ; during perestroika he became involved in the radical nationalist Pamjat movement . In the following years he was known as an advocate for the reintroduction of the monarchy and was considered one of the most important living artists in Russia.

Glasunov was an opponent of democracy and an advocate of the estates , privileges and restrictions.

According to his spokesman, Dmitri Peskov , President Putin “had a long friendship with the painter”.

Ilya Glasunov died on July 9, 2017 in Moscow.

International contacts

Glasunow used his privileges as a Soviet state artist within the framework of the political possibilities of the time to build up the cultural dialogue with the West and the GDR . Contact with intellectuals and artists in Western Europe was to be kept discreet. In 1987, Glasunov traveled to Germany with the knowledge of Mikhail Gorbachev to visit the sculptor Arno Breker . At this meeting in May, the guest made a portrait of the sculptor who was 30 years older than him. A film document was created. He interviewed the former German state sculptor No. 1 about his experiences with Josef Stalin , who wanted to bring Breker back to the Soviet Union in 1945.
