Wiktor Antonovich Sadovnichi ( Russian Виктор Антонович Садовничий , English transcription Viktor Antonovich Sadovnichiy; born April 3, 1939 in Krasnopawlowka , Kharkov Oblast ) is a Russian mathematician and since 1992 rector of the Moscow Lomonosov University . He has been a corresponding member since 1994, since 1997 he has been a full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences , from 2008 to 2013 he was its vice-president. In 1998 he was elected a member of the Academia Europaea .

Sadownitschi studied at Lomonosov University, where he received his doctorate in 1967 and habilitated in 1974 (Russian doctorate), became a professor in 1975 and had the chair of mathematical analysis since 1982. He dealt in particular with spectral theory of differential operators (in this area he founded a seminar in Moscow in 1967) and mathematical modeling, especially for space travel (including simulators for astronaut training). From 1995 he was director of the Institute for Mathematical Investigation of Complex Systems at Lomonosov University.

Until 2019, the Russian President only had the right to extend the term of office of the rector of the university twice beyond retirement age; So that the now 80-year-old Sadownitschi could remain in office after 27 years, the Duma changed the wording of the law in question and deleted the restriction “twice”.

Sadownitischi has been awarded the Order of Merit for the Fatherland of all four classes, the Alexander Nevsky Order and twice the Order of the Red Banner of Labor . In 1989 he received the State Prize of the USSR and in 2006 the Keldysch Gold Medal of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 2008 he received an honorary doctorate in Belgrade.

He is president of the Moscow Society of Naturalists .
