Yuri Sergejewitsch Ossipow ( Russian Юрий Сергеевич Осипов ; English transcription Yurii Sergeevich Osipov; born July 7, 1936 in Tobolsk ) is a Russian mathematician and specialist in mechanics. He has been a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences since 1987 and was its president from 1991 to 2013.

Life

After studying mechanics at the Gorky State University of the Urals , Osipov initially worked at his alma mater, before moving to the Department of Mathematics and Mechanics of the Urals Department of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1969. There he headed the differential equations department from 1972 and the entire institute from 1986. In 1993 he went to Moscow to take the post of director of the Steklov Institute of Mathematics , which he held until 2004.

In 1965 Ossipow received his doctorate, in 1971 his habilitation (Russian doctorate), in 1975 he received the title of professor. In 1984 Ossipov was elected as a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (in the Mechanics and Control Processes Department) and became a full member (Mechanical Engineering, Mechanics and Control Processes Department) three years later. In December 1991 Osipov was elected President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which emerged from the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, replacing Guri Martschuk . He was re-elected in 1996, 2001, 2006 and 2008. He was also up for re-election in 2013, but withdrew his candidacy at the Academy's presidium meeting fifteen days before the election. On May 29, 2013, Vladimir Fortov was elected as his successor. The election has yet to be confirmed by President Vladimir Putin .

Ossipow dealt with dynamic systems and their control, with application in mechanics and mechanical engineering.

Osipov was also a member of the Security Council of the Russian Federation .

Osipov received numerous prizes and awards, including the Order of Merit for the Fatherland of All Four Classes, the Alexander Nevsky Order , and the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic . Ossipow has also been a knight since 2003 and commander of the French Legion of Honor since 2011 . He has been a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences since 1996.

In 1997 he received the Leonhard Euler Gold Medal and in 2010 the Demidow Prize .
