Genrich Wassiljewitsch Novoschilow
Genrich Wassiljewitsch Novoschilow ( Russian Ге́нрих Васи́льевич Новожи́лов ; born October 27, 1925 in Moscow ; † April 28, 2019 ibid.) Was a Soviet or Russian aircraft designer, doctoral engineer and professor. The member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR developed various variants of the heavy military transport aircraft Il-76 , the passenger aircraft Il-96, as well as the twin-engine propeller aircraft Il-114 . The double hero of socialist labor was the general designer of the aircraft manufacturer Ilyushin from 1970 to 2005 .
Life
Novoshilov's parents were members of the Soviet armed forces. During the German-Soviet war he was evacuated to Penza and graduated from high school there. After returning to Moscow, he worked at the Department of Physics at the Moscow State Aviation Institute , where from 1943 he was a student at the Faculty of Aircraft Construction. In 1949, after successfully completing his studies, he started working for Ilyushin. He contributed to the development of the Il-14 passenger aircraft (first flight in 1950), the Il-46 reactive bomber (1952) and the Il-40 ground attack aircraft (1953). He was the chief development engineer for the Il-54 bomber , which was never mass-produced. In 1951 he joined the CPSU , from 1956 to 1958 he was secretary of the industrial party committee and then deputy to the chief designer of the Il-18 . As the first deputy of the general designer, he headed the series production of the Il-62 from 1964 , for which he was awarded the Lenin Prize in 1970 together with other employees of the aviation consortium .
On July 28, 1970 Novoshilov became the general designer of the Moscow mechanical engineering plant "Strela". From 1979 he was a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, was elected a full member in 1984 and took on tasks in the field of mechanics and process management. Aircraft types such as Il-76, Il-86, Il-96-300 and Il-114 were developed under his leadership . He then worked as a general designer, chairman of the board of directors and main advisor to the general director of the Ilyushin Aviation Consortium. Most recently he was the company's honorary general designer.
From 1986 to 1991 Novoshilov was a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU and from 1974 to 1989 a member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR . He was one of the initiators of the Moscow International Aviation and Space Salon .
Novoschilow is the author of the book "About Me and Airplanes" (2011) as well as numerous scientific papers on the aerodynamics of the airplane wing, the airframe safety in the event of damage and others. He held around 130 patents.
Novoshilov was married and had a son who also works as an aeronautical engineer.
