The Soviet Ilyushin Il-46 ( Russian Ильюшин Ил-46 ) was a twin-engine heavy bomber and was created parallel to the Tu-16 from the Tupolev development office .

development

The very successful Il-28 , also developed by Ilyushin , served as a template , but the new design was kept somewhat larger. The wingspan was increased by around 9 m and the fuselage length by around 10 m.

Like its predecessor, the Il-46 was designed as a cantilevered shoulder- wing aircraft with a negatively swept wing trailing edge, and the elevator and rudder unit had a positive arrow. A pressurized cabin was also available.

Development began in 1951, the prototype first flew on August 15, 1952. The testing went without incident, but ultimately the more powerful Tu-16 was chosen.
