The Ilyushin Il-6 ( Russian Ильюшин Ил-6 ) was a twin-engine Soviet bomber of the Second World War . It was planned as a further development of the Ilyushin Il-4 , which was built in large numbers , but did not go into series production. Four of them were built.

history

Development began in 1942 as a successor to the tried and tested Il-4 . The Il-6 was visually similar to its predecessor, but was a bit larger overall and had two additional weapons on both sides of the fuselage. Two ATsch-30B diesel engines from Tscharomski were used as the drive, followed by two more powerful ATsch-30BFs later . The first flight with Wladimir Kokkinaki at the controls took place on August 7, 1943, but the test was discontinued shortly afterwards because the flight behavior of the machine was extremely unstable and the controls also caused problems. The deficiencies could be remedied after a few tests and the tests were resumed from autumn 1944.

Ultimately, however, it was decided not to transfer the Il-6 into series production, as it could only be used to a limited extent from field airports due to its long take-off and landing routes and the diesel engines still did not work properly.
