The Ilyushin Il-54 ( Russian Ильюшин Ил-54 , NATO code name : Blowlamp ) was a twin- engine Soviet military aircraft . It was developed on the basis of the Il-30 and was intended to complement the Il-28 as a tactical bomber .

history

The first drafts of the swept-wing bomber were compiled in March 1953 and saw before, like the two engines of 16 Tu- positioning the right and left of the fuselage and a wing in low profile thickness mid-wing arrangement to be provided. However, difficulties in designing and adapting the wing spars meant that this idea was discarded. In the end, it was decided to use a shoulder- wing design with hanging engines under the wings. While a nose wheel landing gear was envisaged in the first draft, a tandem landing gear was now installed, which had been tested for the first time in the Soviet Union on the aircraft 150 . It was developed by Brunolf Baade , the designer of the first and only East German jet airliner, the 152 .

A total of two prototypes were built. Vladimir Kokkinaki began flight tests of the first aircraft on April 3, 1955 , and the second machine followed in the same year. The tests were successful, but serial production and thus transfer to the Soviet Air Force was waived in favor of the Jak-27 and Jak-28 .
