The Ilyushin Il-114 ( Russian Ильюшин Ил-114 ) is a twin-engine light cargo and regional passenger aircraft from Soviet and Russian production. It is intended for domestic air traffic up to 1000 km. The Il-114 was designed as a replacement for the Antonow An-24 / 26 / 30 / 32 and can also use grass slopes. During the construction of the aircraft, attention was paid to quiet and economical engines . Offered as a cargo machine, the machine has a 3.31 m × 1.78 m loading door on the left.

construction

Cockpit of an Il-114

The Ilyushin Il-114 was designed as a conventional cantilever low wing aircraft in all-metal construction. During the construction, special emphasis was placed on an increased proportion of composite materials in the overall construction in order to reduce the empty weight and increase profitability. The aircraft's equipment is designed to be able to operate from airports with poorly developed infrastructure and adverse climatic conditions. Another new aspect that flowed into the design of the machine was the use of a glass cockpit with five screens and electronic avionics for a two-man cockpit crew. The passenger cabin is 18.9 m long, 2.64 m wide and 1.92 m high. A 2 + 2 configuration with a central aisle was selected for the arrangement of the passenger seats.

history

The Il-114 was created on the basis of an order placed by Aeroflot in 1983 for a successor to the An-24 . The construction phase took place in 1984/85, and construction began in early 1986. The first of three prototypes (license plates СССР–54000) flew for the first time on March 29, 1990 with Vyacheslav Semjonowitsch Belousov from the Zhukovsky test center . Two more were used for stress and static tests on the ground. The first production aircraft made its maiden flight on August 7, 1992. Delivery began in 1994.

The Il-114-100 variant was offered with Pratt & Whitney PW127-H engines and a sextant avionics system. The first prototype with western technology had its maiden flight on January 26, 1999.

In addition to production in Moscow, the aircraft was also built in a manufacturing facility in Tashkent , Uzbekistan . Despite the initial interest from Bulgarian, Polish, Romanian and Ukrainian airlines, no orders were received. Production in Uzbekistan was therefore stopped, the factory closed and production stopped in 2012. The last six aircraft still operated by Uzbekistan Airways in Uzbekistan were retired in 2018.

A new version of the program took place in the course of the Ukraine conflict and the discontinuation of the An-140 program at Awiakor in Samara in 2015. The new version of the IL-114 is to be modernized as far as possible, this affects both avionics and engines. This new version was given the designation Il-114-300 and is to be equipped with, among other things, Klimow TW7-117 ST engines. On September 12, 2017, an Il-76LL took off to test the engine. According to the planning at the time, the certification of the new version should take place by 2018 and the first aircraft should be delivered in 2022, assembly of the first aircraft began in 2019 and flight tests are expected after 2021 after delivery of all components. The certification of the aircraft with a maximum capacity of 50 to 68 seats should now take place in 2022.

Incidents

Of the 20 units produced, two machines were lost:

  • On July 5, 1993, an aircraft ( aircraft registration number RA-54001 ) crashed during a test flight. During take-off, engine 2 did not develop enough power, and there were problems with the electrical system. Five of the nine crew members on board lost their lives in the incident.
  • On December 5, 1999, a cargo plane (aircraft registration number UK-91004 ) crashed while taking off on the way from Moscow to Tashkent . A strong gust of wind wedged the rudder as the machine rolled to the start line, making it difficult for the crew to keep the machine on course. Nevertheless, the captain decided to start. Immediately after taking off, the machine yawed to the left, collided with a wall and went up in flames. Five of the seven crew members were killed in the incident.
