The Ilyushin Il-102 ( russian Ильюшин Ил-102 ) was a Soviet attack aircraft of the Cold War . Only two prototypes were created because the concept was already out of date at the time it was created.

The OKB Ilyushin began after the experience of the Vietnam War from 1967 with the construction work to a heavily armed and armored aircraft to combat ground targets. At the same time, the T-8, the later Su-25 , was built in OKB Suchoi . The development group around chief designer Genrich Novoschilow was based on the Il-40 , a jet-powered attack aircraft from the 1950s. The armored hull, which protected the crew, the engines, the fuel tanks and the most important systems, was retained. A rear-firing gunner was also provided, in keeping with the tradition of the successful Il-2 from World War II . Overall, however, the project reached larger dimensions than the Il-40 and should also be able to carry almost six times the weapon load of its predecessor.
The draft was submitted in early 1970 under the designation Il-42 together with Suchois T-8 to a commission, which rejected both. The reason was the prevailing military doctrine at the time , which provided for ground troops to be supported only by attack helicopters or fighter-bombers . The rear-firing gunner of the Il-42 in particular was viewed as antiquated.
Because of the bad reviews, Ilyushin's drafts were thoroughly revised. The armored hull was given up, only the cabins of the crew received armor. Self-sealing tanks were installed for this. The shape of the hull was changed for better visibility.
The resulting model was named Il-102 . It had three bomb bays per wing and a total of eight external load stations under the fuselage and wings, so that a weapon load of 7200 kg could be carried. The prototype was built without official approval and therefore dragged on until the turn of the year 1981/82. In May 1982, however, a construction and testing stop was ordered, as the Su-25 had meanwhile prevailed and its production started at that time.
Nevertheless, the Il-102 took off on September 25, 1982 under the code name OSE-1 with Ilyushin's chief test pilot S. G. Blisnjuk on its maiden flight . For this purpose, she was specially transported to a military airfield in Belarus . The tests lasted until December 29, 1987. During this time, the Il-102 completed 367 flights with no complications. When the engines had reached their maximum operating life, the test was stopped and the aircraft mothballed near Ilyushin.
In August 1992 the Il-102 was presented to the public on the occasion of the first Moscow aviation fair MAKS .
