Ernst Vollrath

Ernst Vollrath (born January 25, 1932 in Wevelinghoven ; † January 30, 2004 in Bochum ) was a German political philosopher who had mainly dealt with the works of Hannah Arendt since the early 1970s and developed a theory of the political on this basis . He was married to the historian Hanna Vollrath .

Life

After studying philosophy in Freiburg, he was in Cologne in 1959 with studies on the theory of categories of Aristotle Dr. phil. PhD. From 1966 to 1968 he taught as Professeur Titulaire at the University of Dakar in Senegal. The habilitation took place in 1969 in Cologne.

In 1970 he got to know Hannah Arendt personally - the two then exchanged letters - and since then has mainly dealt with her thinking. In 1971 his article Politics and Metaphysics appeared: On the political thought of Hannah Arendt . In this essay, he made it clear that he shared Arendt's philosophical and political concepts. Here, as in later publications, he speaks of Arendt's “Phenomenology of the Political”.

As early as the early 1970s, Arendt had been campaigning for Vollrath to be able to teach political theory in the field of philosophy from 1973 at the New School for Social Research in New York. In addition, he also took part in Arendt's seminars at this university. In 1972 Vollrath attended a conference in Toronto with Hannah Arendt , the minutes of which were published.

After his return to Germany in 1976 he became professor of philosophy at the University of Cologne . Even after his retirement in 1999, he continued to work with Hannah Arendt. He was thus one of the very few scientists who had early research reports on Arendt. Arendt was hardly received in the West and East German academic and political discussion, the few references mostly had negative connotations.

In 2001 Vollrath was awarded the Hannah Arendt Prize for Political Thinking together with Daniel Cohn-Bendit . The keynote address was given by Antonia Grunenberg, chairwoman of the Hannah Arendt Center in Oldenburg . His main works, in which he developed a theory of the political and its perception (in Vollrath's terminology: "apperception"), appeared in 1987 and 2003.

Until recently involved in discourses about Hannah Arendt, which in the meantime had become more and more important in Germany, he died in 2004 at the age of 72. His grave is in the Melaten cemetery in Cologne (lit. D, between HWG and lit. H).
