Otto Pöggeler (born December 12, 1928 in Attendorn ; † December 10, 2014 in Bochum ) was a German philosopher .

Live and act

Otto Pöggeler received his doctorate in German studies under Johannes Hoffmeister at the University of Bonn in 1955 with a thesis on "Hegel's Critique of Romanticism" (expanded Munich 1999). In 1964/65 he completed his habilitation in philosophy at the University of Heidelberg with Hans-Georg Gadamer . His habilitation thesis on Hegel's youth writings and the idea of a phenomenology of the mind was published by him in parts ( Hegel's idea of a phenomenology of the mind , 1973; Hegel studies). Pöggeler used other parts in new, different contexts. In 1961, Pöggeler became editor of the newly founded Hegel Studies, in 1968 Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Hegel Archive at the Ruhr University in Bochum , where since then the edition published by the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and the Arts in conjunction with the German Research Foundation of the collected works of Hegel is developed. In 1973 he was visiting professor at Pennsylvania State University , in 1988 at the State University of New York at Stony Brook . Since 1977 Pöggeler was a corresponding member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts. From 1978 to 1983 he was President of the German Society for Phenomenological Research, of which he became an honorary member. In 1994 he retired. He headed the Hegel Archive until 1997.

Otto Pöggeler worked in particular on the philosophers Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel , Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger . For his own thinking, phenomenology and hermeneutic philosophy were essential. He saw himself as a representative of a phenomenological "open hermeneutics". This takes and grasps truth as a historical event in a moving, open whole. Pöggeler's research focused primarily on the relationship between philosophy and politics as well as that between philosophy and art ( Paul Celan , Paul Klee ). He and Celan had such a close friendship that he was able to fall back on his statements for many interpretations of the poems.
