The Zhukovsky Airport ( IATA : ZIA , ICAO : UUBW , Russian Аэропорт Жуковский ) is the fourth international airport of Moscow . It is a former military airfield near Zhukovsky in Moscow Oblast and was previously named after the nearby city of Ramenskoye . The airfield has a passenger terminal with a size of 7000 square meters.

In 1957, the world's fastest passenger aircraft, the Tupolev Tu-114 , took off on its maiden flight from this airfield. For a long time Ramenskoye was a purely military airfield. It was previously operated by a subsidiary of the Mikhail Gromov University of Flight Research . With 5.4 km it has the longest slope in Europe . The former Bykowo Airport and the Myachkovo Airport are also nearby .

Since 2006, civil use has also been possible. In March 2011, the then Russian Prime Minister announced Vladimir Putin , charter flights and low cost airlines there settle wanting. The Lithuanian Avia Solutions Group (ASG) invested in the construction of the airport. The project planners were the Lithuanian company Vilniaus architektūros studija (VAS) and the Russian construction company "Strojpodrjad". A shopping center, parking lots, three office centers, a cargo terminal, an aircraft maintenance center and a hotel were built at the airport. The final completion is planned for 2020, it should then be able to accommodate 12 million passengers per year.

Incidents

On August 15, 2019, an Ural Airlines aircraft had to make an emergency landing in a corn field ( 55 ° 30 ′ 42.3 ″ N , 38 ° 15 ′ 1.2 ″ E ) near the airport. After the start of the Airbus A321 at Zhukovsky Airport on the way to Simferopol in the Crimea , Ural Airlines Flight 178 got caught in a swarm of gulls . Air Show

The MAKS air show takes place regularly at the airfield . During the time of the aviation fair, the disused runway 08/26 will be used as an exhibition area.
