The TAMCHINSKY DATSAN ( Russian дацан Тамчинский even Гусиноозёрский дацан ) is a Dazan ( Buddhist monastery with University) at the southwestern end of the Gussinojesees at settlement Gussinoje Ozero near the village Gusinoozyorsk ( Republic of Buryatia , Russia ). It was founded in 1741 and has been a teaching facility since 1861. From 1809 until its closure in 1938 and partial destruction, it was the residence of the highest Buddhist hierarchy in Buryatia and thus a religious center. In 1957 the Dazan was declared a historical monument by the Buryat government. A dugan (individual temple on the Dazan site) was brought to the Transbaikalian Ethnographic Museum, which opened in 1973 . In 1990 the monastery was reopened.
