Gussinoosjorsk ( Russian Гусиноозёрск ) is a city in the Republic of Buryatia ( Russia ) with 24,582 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located in Transbaikalia , about 110 km southwest of the republic capital Ulan-Ude , at the northeast end of the Gussinojesees in the broad valley, through which the Selenga flows, between the foothills of the Chamar-Daban in the west and the Selenga mountains in the east.

The city of Gussinoosjorsk is the administrative center of the Selenga Rajon ( Selenginski rajon ).

Gussinoosjorsk is located on the A165 Ulan-Ude- Mongolian border and five kilometers from the Sagustai station of the Trans-Mongolian Railway Ulan-Ude- Nauschki - Ulaanbaatar .

history

Gussinoosjorsk was established in 1939 as the Shakhty settlement as part of the development of the brown coal deposits discovered here and received city rights in 1953 under its current name. It was named after the lake, which is Russian for goose lake .

Culture and sights

The Gussinojesee south of the city

At the opposite, southwestern end of the lake, about 30 kilometers from Gussinoosjorsk, a Buddhist monastery, the Tamtschinski-Dazan, has existed since 1741 near the present-day settlement of Gussinoje Osero .

In the village of Novoselenginsk, about 25 kilometers southeast, there is a museum, originally founded in 1845, for the Decembrists who were exiled here and partly buried in the village .

economy

The main industry of the city is lignite, which at times came to a halt during the economic crisis of the 1990s, in Cholboldschin- open pit ( Холбольджинский / Cholboldschinski) on the east bank of the Gussinojesees and based on this energy with that of the OGK-3 operated Gussinoosjorsker thermal power plant ( Гусиноозёрская ГРЭС / Gussinoosjorskaja GRES). There are also companies in the light and food industry as well as the construction industry.
