Sakamensk ( Russian Закаменск ) is a city in the Republic of Buryatia ( Russia ) with 11,524 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located in Transbaikalia , about 420 km southwest of the republic capital Ulan-Ude , in the valley of the Modonkul , which flows into the Jida , a left tributary of the Selenga . Sakamensk, located on the northern flank of the Jida Mountains, which are over 1,800 meters high , is only about eight kilometers from the Mongolian border.

The city of Sakamensk is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .

Zakamensk is a 245 km long road with fixed station Dschida the railway Ulan-Ude - naushki - Ulan Bator ( Trans-Mongolian Railway connected) and has a small airport.

history

Sakamensk was founded in 1893 as a mining settlement with the name Gorodok (Russian for town ). The official foundation of the town took place in 1933 when the mining of a tungsten - molybdenum deposit began . In 1944 it received its town charter and in 1959 its current name (after a Russian name for the area that has been known since the 18th century, Закамень / sakamen for behind the stone or rock , i.e. beyond the mountain ranges south of Lake Baikal , e.g. Chamar-Daban ).

Cityscape The determining the degradation of the ore deposit is southeast of the city and the ore enrichment in Dschida-tungsten-molybdenum combine ( Джидинский вольфрамово-молибденовый комбинат / Dschidinski wolframowo-molibdenowy kombinat), which mainly metallurgical plants of the Ural supplies.
