Babushkin ( Russian Ба́бушкин ) is a small town in the Republic of Buryatia ( Russia ) with 4831 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located about 120 km west of the republic capital Ulan-Ude on the south-east bank of Lake Baikal .
Administratively, the city belongs to the Kabansk Rajon and lies on the Trans-Siberian Railway ( Myssovaya station , line kilometer 5477 from Moscow ) and on the M55 Irkutsk - Chita highway .
history
The place was established in 1892 as the Myssovaya post office and the starting point of the trade route from the east bank of Lake Baikal via Kjachta to China .
A few years later, in connection with the construction of the Transbaikal section of the Trans-Siberian Railway , which was opened in 1900, the location was chosen as the eastern end of the railway ferry connection across the lake, which existed around the southern end of Lake Baikal until the completion of the Baikal Railway in 1905. In 1902 the town was granted under the name Myssowsk ( Мысовск ) city law (according to the station's name from Russian мыс / mys for Cape , with respect to the location on the lake).
From June 6, 1925 Myssovsk had the status of an urban-type settlement . On January 18, 1941, the name was changed to Babushkin after the Russian revolutionary Ivan Babushkin , who was shot there during the Russian Revolution of 1905–1907 ; at the same time the city status was given again.
