Iwan Wassiljewitsch Babuschkin ( Russian Иван Васильевич Бабушкин ; * 3 January July / 15 January  1873 greg. In Ledengskoje , Vologda governor ; † 18 January July / 31 January  1906 greg. In Myssovsk ) was a Russian revolutionary and politician .

Life

The farmer's son Babuschkin trained as a metal worker from 1887 to 1891. From the summer of 1891 he worked in this profession in a factory in Saint Petersburg . In 1894 he became a member of a Marxist circle there led by Lenin . From 1895 he was active in the " Petersburg Combat League for the Liberation of the Working Class " and agitated among workers in the Petersburg factories.

In January 1896 he was charged with his revolutionary activities and exiled to Yekaterinoslav in February 1897 . There he founded a league of struggle for the emancipation of the working class in December 1897 and a section of the RSDLP in October 1898 . In 1900 he founded the illegal newspaper Южный рабочий ( Juschni rabotschi ; Eng. "Worker of the South") and was a correspondent for the newspaper Искра ( Iskra ; Eng. "The Spark") edited by Lenin . From 1900 to 1901 he was active for the party in various Russian cities, including Moscow , Smolensk , Polatsk , Orechowo-Sujewo and Ivanowo-Voznesensk .

In 1902 he escaped from the Jekaterinoslav prison and went to London , but returned to Russia in October 1902 and became a member of the St. Petersburg RSDRP committee, where he fought against the police-led trade unions of Colonel Sergei Vasilyevich Zubatov. In 1903 he was arrested again and exiled to Verkhoyansk in Siberia for five years .

After he was released on amnesty in 1905 , he took an active part in the 1905/07 revolution. He was a member of the party committees of Irkutsk and Chita and wrote articles for the Bolshevik newspaper Забайкальский рабочий ( Zabaikalski Rabotschi ; German "The Transbaikal worker"). Together with Viktor Konstantinowitsch Kurnatowski and Anton Antonowitsch Kostyushko-Valjuschanitsch he was one of the leaders of the armed uprising in Chita.

In January 1906 he and five other comrades who were smuggling weapons from China to Irkutsk were arrested at the Trans-Baikal Railway Station in Slyudjanka by the punitive expedition of General Möller-Sakomelski . On January 31, they were shot dead at the Myssovsk train station without a sentence.

Honors

The city of Myssovsk in Buryatia and his birthplace Ledengskoje were renamed Babushkin in his honor. Streets are named after him in numerous Russian cities.

In 1973 the Soviet Post issued a special postage stamp in honor of his 100th birthday .
