Slyudyanka ( Russian Слюдянка ) is a city in the Irkutsk Oblast ( Russia ) with 18,574 inhabitants (October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located on the south bank of Lake Baikal , north of the Khamar-Daban , about 125 km south of the Oblast capital Irkutsk .
The city of Slyudyanka is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .
Slyudyanka is on the Trans-Siberian Railway . There are two stations here, Slyudyanka-II (km 5306 from Moscow , branch of the old Baikal Railway ) and Slyudyanka -I (km 5311). The city is also on the M55 Irkutsk - Chita road .
history
When the mining of mica began on the southwest bank of the Baikal in the 17th century, the first small settlements arose here. The mica, Russian sljuda , also gave the opening out here in the lake river Slyudyanka the name.
When the Baikal Railway (also called Baikal Circular Railway) was completed in 1905 as the last section of the Trans-Siberian Railway, the station and the new settlement belonging to it were given the same name.
In 1936 the place received city rights.

Culture and sights
Slyudyanka is the tourist center for the southwestern part of Lake Baikal, the starting point for visiting the western Khamar-Daban and the southeastern part of Eastern Sayan, as well as the old Baikal Railway, which branches off from today's Trans-Siberian route at the nearby settlement of Kultuk in the direction of Port Baikal / Listvyanka represents an important engineering monument.
In the village there is the Mineralogical Museum of Baikal Gemstones ( Samozwety Baikala ).
economy
In Slyudyanka there are several companies in the building materials industry (cement raw materials, etc.), as well as a fish factory and railway companies. Mica and marble are mined in the mountains south of the village .
