Cheremkhovo ( Russian Черемхово ) is a city in Irkutsk Oblast in Russia with 52,647 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located in the northern foothills of the Eastern Sayan , about 15 kilometers from the left bank of the Angara and 130 kilometers to the northwest from the oblast capital Irkutsk .
Cheremkhovo is the administrative center of the same name Rajons Cheremkhovo .
history
Cheremkhovo was founded in 1772 as a village and post office on the Moscow tract . The name refers to the Cheremchovka (also Cheremschana) flowing here, which in turn is derived from the Russian cheryomucha for bird cherry .
At the end of the 19th century, the Trans-Siberian Railway ran through the town. During this time, the coal deposits discovered here began to be exploited ; In 1896 the first shaft went into operation, in 1906 there were already 89 in the area. In 1917 Cheremkhovo received city rights.
The heyday of coal mining, meanwhile also in open-cast mines , and thus the city was the middle of the 20th century. During this time Cheremkhovo, as the economic center of the Irkutsk coal basin, had well over 100,000 inhabitants.

Economy and Infrastructure
The most important branch of the economy is still hard coal mining. There are also mechanical engineering, wood processing, light and food industries.
Cheremkhovo is a station on the Trans-Siberian Railway (km 5054 from Moscow ), from which a 20-kilometer freight line branches off to Swirsk ( Makarjewo station ) on the Angara.
The M53 trunk road from Novosibirsk via Krasnoyarsk to Irkutsk, part of the trans-Siberian road connection, passes about 10 kilometers southeast of the city.
