Sajansk ( Russian Сая́нск ) is a city in the Irkutsk Oblast ( Russia , central southern Siberia ) with 40,800 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located in the plain north of the Eastern Sayan , about 270 km northwest of the Oblast capital Irkutsk , on the Oka River , a left tributary of the Angara . It is administratively directly subordinate to the oblast .

Sayansk is connected by a branch line (freight traffic only) to the city and station Sima on the Trans-Siberian Railway , 20 km away . To the southeast of the city, the M53 Novosibirsk –Irkutsk– Listvyanka road passes the town.

The Sajanski Pass of the same name , however, is located in Western Sayan and is 800 km away.

history

Sayansk was created from 1970 in connection with the establishment of a chemical plant. The chemical plant was built to the left of the Oka River, between today's Sajansk and the city of Sima, the city itself a good ten kilometers from the plant in the middle of the taiga to the right of the river bank. With the completion of the work, the place grew rapidly, received the status of an urban-type settlement in 1975 and town charter in 1985. The place name refers to the location in the foothills of the Sajan Mountains.

Culture and sights

The Sayansk picture gallery is kept in Sayansk , a larger collection of Soviet art in particular . A building worth seeing is the Russian Orthodox Church, which is predominantly made of wood on the outside in the upper part and completely on the inside.

A new monument in his honor was unveiled in Sayansk to mark Lenin's 150th birthday .

economy

The city-building company is the chemical plant of Sajanskchimprom -AG. One of the largest in Russia, it produces caustic soda , liquid chlorine , polyvinyl chloride and various household chemicals based on a nearby rock salt deposit .

There are also companies in the construction and food industries.
